Can
We Preserve Liberty in an Age of Terrorism?
Two Perspectives
Security
is essential for the enjoyment of freedom
in a liberal society, but this does not mean
that we should accept security at any price.
In late 2003, The Centre for Independent
Studies held the inaugural Ross Parish essay
competition and invited entrants to consider
whether, in an age of terrorism, the benefits
of greater security outweigh the costs in
reduced freedom. Nicholas Southwood was awarded
the first prize, and John Humphreys won second
prize with their essays.
The
Transformation of International Law
Darryn
M. Jensen looks
at the theory and practice of international
law, and its numerous critics, and on resolving
the rights and duties in the international
system.
