Asian Literacy in the ‘Asian Century’ - Benjamin Herscovitch
The scale and speed of the power shift from the North Atlantic to Asia has provoked renewed discussion of the adequacy of Australia’s Asian literacy. Coinciding with the lead up to the release of the government’s white paper on Australia in the ‘Asian Century’, both sides of politics have also called for a greater emphasis on equipping Australians with the necessary skills to navigate Asian languages and cultures.
In this Meet the Researcher lecture, CIS Policy Analyst Benjamin Herscovitch will explore the demographics of Australian language policy. What is the likely role of English in the ‘Asian Century’? How should Australia’s Asian literacy be rated? Does multicultural Australia already have the necessary human capital to effectively engage with Asia?
