MELBOURNE EVENT - Breaking the Adoption Taboo In Australia

Guest speakers:  Terry Barnes (withdrawn), John Hirst, Jane Hunt and Dr Jeremy Sammut

Why are children in dysfunctional families abused and neglected despite being reported many times to child protection authorities? Why are children further damaged by being cycled in and out of unstable foster care? Why are there so few adoptions in Australia despite the thousands of children in long-term care?

Adoption has been internationally proven as the best way to provide a safe, stable and loving family life for children who are unable to live with their biological parents. However, in relation to comparable countries, Australia has very low rates of adoption.

To coincide with National Adoption Awareness Week, this special event will examine the issues raised by CIS Research Fellow Dr Jeremy Sammut’s new book, The Madness of Australian Child Protection: Why Adoption Will Rescue Australia’s Underclass Children (Connor Court).

Copies of Dr Jeremy Sammut’s book will be available for purchase on the night.

Terry Barnes has withdrawn as a panellist for the event.

John Hirst was a member of the History Department at La Trobe University from 1968 to 2007. He has written many books on Australian history, including Convict Society and Its Enemies, The Strange Birth of Colonial Democracy, The Sentimental Nation, Sense and Nonsense in Australian History and The Shortest History of Europe.

Jane Hunt is the CEO of Adopt Change, a highly influential organisation advocating for change in adoption policy and practices in Australia. She is leading the development of the next stage of the organisation, including setting the strategic direction, developing the business model and advocating the establishing a centre of excellence in pre and post adoptive care. Jane is passionate about providing children the best start in life so that they can live rich and full lives.

Dr Jeremy Sammut is a research fellow in the Social Foundations Programme at The Centre for Independent Studies and author of The Madness of Australian Child Protection: Why Adoption Will Rescue Australia’s Underclass Children.
