We welcome contributions to our quarterly magazine, Policy.
Now approaching its 20th year of publication, Policy continues
to fill a critical gap between academia and the mainstream media.
In general, articles in Policy are longer and more analytical
that those in the quality press but shorter and more accessible
than those in academic journals. We strongly advise prospective
authors to familiarise themselves with the magazine and to have
a sense for the kinds of issues we cover and the style of writing
we prefer. We seek original analyses of economic, social and
foreign policy as well as essays and commentary on ideas, cultural
issues and international affairs, with particular emphasis on
Australasia.
All original submissions to Policy are subject to a reviewing
process. Articles should range between 2,000 and 5,000 words.
Unsolicited submissions either shorter or much longer than this
will not be considered. Articles may be submitted by email (our
preferred method), or by fax or mail. Please submit full contact
details including a mailing address, a telephone number and email
address (if applicable).
We rarely consider unsolicited book reviews or review essays.
We ask authors to let us know whether the article has been submitted
to, and is under consideration at, another magazine or journal,
or already published in whole or in part in English.
Policy respects the scholarly canon, but it is not an
academic journal. We strive for readability so contributors are
asked
to be sparing in their use of specialist language, literature
reviews, referencing, and unnecessary diversions. A clear and
concise argument is better than a comprehensive discussion. We
encourage authors to provide full sourcing for their work, but
in published form we try to keep endnotes to a minimum (generally
limited to direct quotes or statements or facts that might otherwise
be challenged without proof). For a PDF of our two page style
guide, please click here.
Authors are responsible for clarifying any copyright issues before
submission.
