The Centre for Independent Studies is Australia’s leading independent think tank dealing with economic, foreign and social policy issues. We are seeking an enthusiastic, organized person to assist the Executive Director and to have a support role in the Events area.
The person selected for this job would have an important role in supporting the Executive Director in his fundraising activities and in areas such as Board meetings, appointments and travel. There would be the opportunity to do a small amount of research and writing. The other part of the role involves assisting the Events Manager with a range of large and small events.
The wide ranging role also involves working closely with various members of staff and the CIS supporters.
Applicants should be a graduate with an interest in public policy and with strong administrative and writing skills. You should be intellectually curious, imaginative, a well-organised self-starter, have great attention to detail, a good communicator, be prepared to ‘muck in’ when needed, confident with computers and databases and should feel comfortable in dealing with people from business, politics and the academic world at the highest levels.
This is great opportunity to work in an intellectually stimulating environment where the ideas that may change Australian public policy are researched and publicised. This unique organization is situated close to public transport and Crows Nest shopping area. The salary range will be between $55,000 to $65,000.

DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL RESEARCH
The Centre for Independent Studies (CIS), Australia’s foremost independent public policy think tank is seeking to employ a Director of Social Research. He or she will have a passion and the intellectual capacity to drive forward the CIS’s social research programmes, an enthusiasm for public policy debate and an ability to guide junior research staff. The full-time position is based in Sydney.
Role and Responsibilities
• Assess current areas of social research and set an ongoing framework with the Executive Director for the next three year period. Current areas of research are education, health, work/family balance, indigenous affairs and welfare.
• Build relationships with universities, policy centres and government in Australia and New Zealand.
• Undertake and lead research projects
• Direct work undertaken by graduate level researchers and encourage professional development of researchers
• Co-ordinate short-term interns
• Write research reports
• Contribute articles to CIS publications
• Communicate the research work to CIS supporters, business, government and the general public through public presentations and speeches, media articles and interviews.
Qualifications and Background
• Postgraduate degree in the humanities or a social science discipline. PhD. preferred but not required.
• Strong publications and research record
• Experience working in academia, business, government, volunteer sector or in think tanks
• Skills in supervising and developing junior researchers
• Strong interest in contributing to the debate around public policy issues
• Strong communication skills
• Good analysis and writing skills
• An interest in building contacts in academia and government
• A genuine interest and understanding of the philosophical direction of The Centre for Independent Studies
Conditions
• Salary is senior level, competitive, and will be commensurate with experience - a Professorial level salary would be a guide.
