BRISBANE EVENT - Breaking the Adoption 'Taboo' in Australia

Guest speakers: Hon Dr Gary Johns, Tess Livingstone, Nadine Wright and Dr Jeremy Sammut

Why are children in dysfunctional families abused and neglected despite being reported many times to child protection authorities? Why are children further damaged by being cycled in and out of unstable foster care? Why are there so few adoptions in Australia despite the thousands of children in long-term care?

Adoption has been internationally proven as the best way to provide a safe, stable and loving family life for children who are unable to live with their biological parents. However, in relation to comparable countries, Australia has very low rates of adoption.

To coincide with National Adoption Awareness Week, this special event will examine the issues raised by CIS Research Fellow Dr Jeremy Sammut’s new book, The Madness of Australian Child Protection: Why Adoption Will Rescue Australia’s Underclass Children (Connor Court).

Hon Dr Gary Johns is a columnist for The Australian and The Spectator and was Special Minister of State in the Keating government.

Tess Livingstone is a journalist with The Australian and the biographer of Australian Cardinal George Pell.

Nadine Wright is the President of Queensland Alliance for Kids. Foster mother & biological mother to 6 wonderful children. Co Founder of Hope For Our Children Charity and active ministry leader of City Women. Speaker and advocate, passionate about for raising awareness the plight of the Queensland foster child. Holds a Bachelor of Education, specializing in Early Childhood.

Dr Jeremy Sammut is a research fellow in the Social Foundations Programme at The Centre for Independent Studies and author of The Madness of Australian Child Protection: Why Adoption Will Rescue Australia’s Underclass Children.
