How Much Justice does a Society Need?

Hard-headed people often say that perfect justice is impossible, merely a dream. the philosopher Kant wrote that nothing perfect could ever be made of mankind’s crooked timber. But Kant knew, and we must learn, that perfect justice is not only impossible, but profoundly destructive of our humanity. It would also, for better or worse, be at the end of the adventure of modernity on which we are all, willy, nilly, embarked.
